Does Mindset Really Matter or is That Just Woo-Woo Stuff?
Category:
Hi everyone, I’m going to start off by asking this: How many of you have ever felt frustrated by your inability to achieve your wellness goals (whatever that might be) despite your best efforts? Do you find yourself caught in a cycle of starting new health routines with enthusiasm, only to abandon them just a few weeks later? If this sounds like you, here’s the good news: you’re not alone.
Today, I want to share something that I believe is the most crucial yet often overlooked aspect of wellness:
Our Mindset.

Despite popular belief, achieving lasting wellness isn’t just about what you do physically; it’s deeply intertwined with your mental approach. I’ve been there myself—meticulously planning the perfect workout routine, stocking up on healthy foods, but then for whatever reasons my motivation starts slipping away after just a few weeks. Sound familiar?
The issue might not be with your body but with your mind. Here’s the thing: our belief system is incredibly powerful. If we believe we can do something, we’re much more likely to do so. But if we doubt ourselves, that skepticism can become a self-fulfilling prophecy which is an interesting form of self-sabotage.
I learned this firsthand during a few challenging periods in my life when I faced significant life and death health challenges where my belief in my ability to recover was not just helpful—it was essential and mandatory in order to have a good outcome.
I had to believe in myself completely as well as the paths that I chose to overcome some serious hurdles such as Lyme disease and Cancer just to name a few, and without having a strong conviction, recovery would have been much more difficult, if at all.

And so today we’re going to explore how our internal mindset shapes our external success, touching on fitness, nutrition, and overall well-being.
Our thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes significantly influence our behaviors and outcomes. When you nurture a positive, resilient mindset, you lay the foundation for lasting changes in your physical health. Throughout this series, we’ll uncover practical strategies, share some real-life examples, and explore a few insights to help you reprogram your thinking and finally achieve those elusive wellness goals by strengthening the Mind-Body Connection.
Today, let’s start by understanding why our mindset matters so much. Our minds are incredibly powerful. The thoughts we hold can either propel us toward our goals or hold us back. This concept, often referred to as the mind-body connection, highlights how our mental state impacts our physical health. Think about it: stress and negative emotions can lead to physical symptoms like headaches, muscle tension, sleep disturbances, and even digestive issues.

On the flip side, a positive mindset can enhance your immune system, boost your energy levels, and help you maintain a healthier lifestyle. There’s some serious science behind this: research is showing us that our brains respond to our thoughts. When we engage in positive thinking, our brains release neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which not only make us feel good but also improves our focus, self-control, and commitment to our goals. Conversely, negative thinking releases stress hormones like cortisol, which can hinder our progress and lead to burnout.

Understanding this mind-body connection underscores the importance of creating a healthy mental environment to support our physical health goals.
As Dr. Shaklee wisely said, ‘The mind is like a wheelbarrow; it only goes where you point it’. The short of that is that the direction and focus of our thoughts largely determine where we end up or what we achieve.

Here’s an easy exercise you can practice anywhere, anytime, so give this a try: Close your eyes and take a few slow deep breaths, and as you breathe in I want you to imagine that you’re filling your body with clean, positive energy. As you breathe out, let go of any negative thoughts, feelings, or stress.

This exercise can help center your mind and body, preparing you for the challenges ahead. Take Sarah for instance—a busy professional who struggled to keep up with her consistent fitness routine that she’d strategically planned out, and despite her best intentions, she often felt too stressed and exhausted to work out at all.
It wasn’t until she began practicing mindfulness and positive affirmations that she saw a real shift. By changing her mindset, Sarah reduced her stress, boosted her energy, and managed to commit to her wellness goals with renewed enthusiasm. She’s now experiencing great success in reaching her goals!

In my next blog we’ll dive deeper into the power of our mindset and explore how reprogramming our thoughts can unlock our true potential and bring about the lasting change you’re looking for. Remember, your mind is a powerful tool and by harnessing its potential, you can achieve the vitality and health you desire. If you have any positive affirmations or mantras that work for you please feel free to share, I’d love to see them!
