Baking Soda and Cancer – What the Research Actually Shows (Supportive Care That Works)
Category: Appetite Loss Solutions
Baking soda and cancer. I’m going to tell you what the research actually shows, what it’s useful for, and why you’ll never hear this from your oncologist.
Tumors create an acidic environment around themselves. That acidity helps them grow, helps them invade surrounding tissue, and helps them resist treatment. Researchers at the University of Arizona Cancer Center found that baking soda can raise the pH around tumors in mice. In some cases, that slowed metastasis or made chemotherapy work better.

That’s real science. Real enough that researchers keep studying it, and because it’s cheap and unpatentable, it gets ignored, minimized, or mocked. That’s the pattern we see over and over again with anything that doesn’t fit the profit model. So where is baking soda actually useful? Supportive care – the part of cancer nobody talks about because it isn’t glamorous and it doesn’t make anyone rich.

Baking soda rinses help with mouth sores, dry mouth, oral discomfort, thick saliva, and metallic taste. This is one of the few places where baking soda is actually recommended because it works and it’s gentle. I’ve had people tell me they couldn’t eat for three days because everything tasted like pennies and metal, and a simple baking soda rinse made food tolerable again. When your mouth is raw, when everything tastes like metal, when eating feels like punishment, a simple rinse can make a difference.

Here’s the basic formula:
1 cup of clean warm water,
1/4 teaspoon of aluminum-free baking soda,
1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized salt (if you can tolerate it)
Fancy or mineral salts have extra minerals that sting, irritate sores, and don’t dissolve cleanly so avoid those. Stir until it’s fully dissolved. Swish for 15 to 30 seconds and spit it out. You can do this several times a day as needed. It’s gentle, it’s safe, and it works.

Baking soda can also help with digestive comfort for some people. Things like reflux, sour stomach, and acid-triggered nausea – not chemo nausea, but the kind of nausea that comes from acid backing up or your stomach being irritated. A tiny amount can neutralize acid and take the edge off discomfort. It’s not considered a treatment for cancer, but it can make the day a little more bearable. Just mix:
½ cup (120 ml) of water
⅛ teaspoon baking soda (aluminum‑free, food‑grade)
Stir until dissolved and sip slowly. Do not exceed this amount unless your health care provider has advised otherwise.
Now, if you’re going to use baking soda in any way, the quality matters. It needs to be aluminum-free, food-grade, clean sodium bicarbonate, and here’s why: aluminum is a neurotoxin that accumulates in the body. When you’re already dealing with cancer and treatment, the last thing you need is adding more toxic load to an already overwhelmed system.

Some mass-produced baking soda contains aluminum compounds as anti-caking agents. You want pure sodium bicarbonate with nothing added, nothing contaminated. Not the cheap, synthetic, mass-processed stuff. Not the box that’s been sitting open in the fridge absorbing every smell in the house. If you’re putting something in your mouth or your body, especially when your immune system is compromised, it needs to be clean.

Let me be clear: baking soda does not cure cancer. It does not replace medical treatment. Anyone selling it as a cure is lying, but anyone dismissing it as completely useless is also lying. The truth lives in the middle, where real patients actually live, and that’s where this conversation belongs.
And here’s the bigger truth: none of these supportive tools matter if you can’t eat. Nutrition is the foundation no matter what therapies you choose: conventional, integrative, alternative, or a mix of all three.

If you’re struggling to eat, if everything tastes wrong, if nausea or metallic taste is wrecking your appetite, you’re fighting with one hand tied behind your back. You can’t heal, you can’t recover, and you can’t maintain strength if you’re starving. That’s the part nobody tells you when they hand you a diagnosis and a stack of pamphlets.

It’s not about perfection, it’s about survival. It’s about getting enough into your body to keep going, because you can’t fight anything – cancer, treatment, stress, or life – if you’re running on fumes.
Baking soda isn’t a recognized cure, and it isn’t magic, but it’s a tool – a cheap, accessible, supportive tool that deserves honest conversation instead of censorship or hype, and that’s what we do here. We talk about the things nobody else will, without the lies, without the fear, and without the profit agenda. Take care of yourself. Feed your body, and I’ll see you in the next blog.
